Being in the right plaice matters

Being in the right plaice matters

Fish and chip business owners, Jean and Bill, have been friends for many years and recently came to stay for a long weekend.

The Sunday was particularly sunny so we took them to The Hive Beach Café at Burton Bradstock for lunch. As always, the place was packed and the queue was long.

Our friends were blown away by the views of Lyme Bay. The food was superb, as always, 2 x fish and chips, 1 x seabass and 1 x whole crab. “Fabulous darlings”.

For the rest of the weekend they didn’t stop talking about The Hive and wanting to run a similar operation in the South West, letting their son run their existing business.

As I explained, the location is vital to the success of The Hive, together with the huge car park, the quality of the fish and the size of the portions.

Jean and Bill are now looking for the right seafront premises. I suggested they think of old pubs and then change the operation. As I pointed out, the cost of the premises and the building works is down to them. Armada will fund the range and all the equipment and furniture as long as the business plan and projection stack up.

No fuss finance

No fuss finance

Trevor and his partner, Alex, have successfully built their property maintenance and letting business over the last 15 years and have used Armada many times to purchase cleaning equipment, small items of office equipment and several vans.

Always conscious to keep their capital intact in case a suitable property becomes available for refurbishing and letting, they are constantly growing their business.

Eventually they outgrew their own premises and were looking for a suitable building for garaging and workshops downstairs and offices for their executive and admin staff upstairs.

Trevor came to us with a shopping list of assets they needed and wanted financed, if possible. These were all for the office space – all new IT and comms equipment, furniture, flooring and lighting and security equipment, together with partitioning and doors.

The shopping list amounted to £105K, but with their track record with us and a strong balance sheet, the decision to support them was easy. All the various suppliers’ invoices were collated and funded on one 3 year contract.

Meeting the customers’ needs is what Armada is all about.

A new opportunity to shine

A new opportunity to shine

Andrew Symms built a very successful bodyshop company, employing 18 staff. After 20 years he decided to sell the business and take time out to plan the next phase in his life.

While on holiday he realised that he still wanted to be involved in the motor industry and he started putting plans together to open an alloy wheel refurbishment outlet in Yeovil, Somerset.

The new venture needed a blasting machine, a spray booth and a compressor but Andrew had difficulties convincing lenders to believe in his new business plan.

Because of Armada’s dedication for supporting start-up SMEs, after due diligence, we were happy to finance his new equipment on a 3 year contract.

Wheelshine of Yeovil is now up and running and with Armada’s help, another entrepreneur is helping the economy to grow.

Good parental guidance

Good parental guidance

The father of sisters, Sarah and Katie, was happy to support them in setting up a new business but on the proviso that they got experience by working for an existing children’s nursery.

After two years of being employed by an existing Armada client, they began putting plans together and looking for suitable premises.

With their family behind them and an introduction to Armada they requested asset finance help to acquire outdoor play equipment and the rubber tiling for the base, together with the latest door entry system and CCTV and the furniture for the premises.

Although the sisters had never run a business and had limited experience, with the parents’ guarantees and the fact that Sarah and Katie owned an unencumbered flat, Armada was happy to support this new venture in Cheshire.

The equipment they required is being funded over 3 years. Father was delighted that the projections indicated that they could afford a 3year repayment profile and that they weren’t tied into long term debt.

Happy parents, happy sisters, happy nursery.

Ta-ta steel, it’s time to smell the coffee

Ta-ta steel, it’s time to smell the coffee

Married man, Gavin Horton, didn’t feel sorry for himself when it looked like his steel works in Port Talbot was going to shut down, instead he took his redundancy and decided to make some lifestyle changes.

Finding a waterfront development in Newport, Gavin had it fitted out as a coffee shop. His plan was to purchase the property and to ask Armada to finance the equipment he needed as well as the flooring.

We have been funding assets for start-up coffee shops for over 40 years. Obviously we are addicted to the fabulous aroma of freshly ground coffee. Macciato for you madam?

Investing in your future success

Investing in your future success

In 2016 the impact of the staycation has been a lifeline for many in the tourism and hospitality industries. Now that vast numbers of holidaymakers have found the hidden gems around our coasts and enjoyed the hassle-free experience of remaining in the UK, we can expect an upturn in the fortunes of the holiday market for many years to come.

Colin and Tanya, long-established clients of Armada, have taken a long look at their previous offering and asked themselves “what will our customers be wanting tomorrow?”

Answer: with their size hotel they want to add indoor and outdoor children’s  play equipment, a new telecoms system to incorporate a listening and monitoring facility and gym equipment for the adults (spinning bikes, rowing machines and treadmills).

Having already secured Armada’s support to finance all these assets, Colin is working hard to have the changes in place for his Christmas trading.

Having successfully run the Haven Spar in Kingsbridge, South Devon, since 2009, father and son, Peter & Nick Mathius were ready to replicate their concept.

Being mindful of the need to choose the right location for their new spa, they eventually acquired an existing spa business in the wealthy, exciting regional centre of Exeter.

As well as planning an overall refurbishment and up-grade of the new premises, Peter and Nick decided to incorporate a new thermal suite. A sauna and Jacuzzi were ordered, together with foot spas, an aroma room, heated loungers and specialised showers.

Armada was happy to finance all the equipment for the thermal suite and spread the £100k cost over 3 years. Now the Haven Spa is bringing therapy and relaxation to the new restaurant quarter of Exeter.

Turning dreams into reality

Turning dreams into reality

Do you ever wish you had thought of an unusual concept for a new business?

Nori did. He looked at opening a sushi restaurant that caters for ladies with spare cash. With hen parties, baby showers and birthdays in mind, he planned for table service run by attractive, smartly dressed, attractive young Asian waiters.

As soon as he found the premises Nori approached Armada for finance in acquiring the furniture, flooring and kitchen fit-out. With two existing successful restaurant businesses behind him, it took only hours to make a decision to support the new venture.

Having financed the setting up of restaurants for over 40 years it’s rare to come across a new concept, however, Nori and Armada made the right call – a brilliant idea, well-funded  and already a ‘go to’ destination.

Supporting a dynasty

Supporting a dynasty

Gilly Pollock’s family has been retailing dairy products and ice cream in Cardiff and Monmouth since 1888.

When Gilly planned her Green & Jenks Gelato House in Monmouth in 2015 she made sure that Armada was in the mix.

Financing the Italian gelato manufacturing plant and refrigeration made us flavour of the month.

As Gilly said  “We were very nervous about financing the new business but these concerns were negated when we were introduced to Armada. We found them so helpful and with a friendly voice to support us. Thank you for everything.”

The Herbert family of MGG Scaffolding in North Wales have always purchased all their equipment from their own resources.

They now see that by financing their tubes, fittings and boards through Armada, they can ‘move the business forward’.

“Armada was very, very helpful from beginning to end. We would recommend them to anyone looking for finance for their business.”
