Start-ups

Starting a new business can be stressful, but not at Armada. We have been supporting start-ups as our PRIMARY objective for nearly 40 years.

Many lenders are not able to or prepared to support start-up businesses, requiring three years accounts before considering a proposal.

This is what makes Armada so unusual. All proposals are considered by people and not computers or ticked boxes. We consider your background, experience and what you are putting into your business. Every situation and proposal is different and therefore needs individual consideration.

Because of our history and our desire to support new start businesses with asset finance, contact us today to enable us to help you.

What we require to make a decision, for a new business or start-up:

  • Permission to run credit searches along with details of all properties owned
  • Business Plan if available
  • Current bank statements

Entrepreneurs with a passion for Far Eastern flavours

Entrepreneurs with a passion for Far Eastern flavours

Although not Japanese themselves, brothers Kash and Asam Munir had always admired the Wagamamas  dining concept and had the idea of opening a fast food noodle bar in the Midlands using fresh produce and far eastern flavours to create a simple and healthy takeaway menu.

Once the brothers had secured the premises they came to a standstill as they had enough savings and investment from family for certain elements of the venture but were stuck when it came to working out how to pay for all the equipment needed to ensure the noodle bar was a quality establishment.

When a friend suggested asset finance, Kash did some research online and came across Armada as experts in funding catering equipment and fit-outs. Within 24 hours of picking up the phone, the brothers had secured the £90k needed to complete the fit-out which included the counter, furniture, flooring and most of the kitchen equipment.

The entrepreneurs plan to open more bars in the near future with Armada as their finance partner.

A new opportunity to shine

A new opportunity to shine

Andrew Symms built a very successful bodyshop company, employing 18 staff. After 20 years he decided to sell the business and take time out to plan the next phase in his life.

While on holiday he realised that he still wanted to be involved in the motor industry and he started putting plans together to open an alloy wheel refurbishment outlet in Yeovil, Somerset.

The new venture needed a blasting machine, a spray booth and a compressor but Andrew had difficulties convincing lenders to believe in his new business plan.

Because of Armada’s dedication for supporting start-up SMEs, after due diligence, we were happy to finance his new equipment on a 3 year contract.

Wheelshine of Yeovil is now up and running and with Armada’s help, another entrepreneur is helping the economy to grow.

Supporting a dynasty

Supporting a dynasty

Gilly Pollock’s family has been retailing dairy products and ice cream in Cardiff and Monmouth since 1888.

When Gilly planned her Green & Jenks Gelato House in Monmouth in 2015 she made sure that Armada was in the mix.

Financing the Italian gelato manufacturing plant and refrigeration made us flavour of the month.

As Gilly said  “We were very nervous about financing the new business but these concerns were negated when we were introduced to Armada. We found them so helpful and with a friendly voice to support us. Thank you for everything.”

Finding solutions, not problems

Finding solutions, not problems

Philippe planned his bakery and potential cookery school carefully, taking time to find the right premises and source the bakery plant.

Problems arose when Parisian born Philippe and his English wife looked for asset funding for their new business. With little equity in their home and no track record, they lost count of the times they were turned away by funders.

At Armada we saw the problem and the solution immediately. With our commitment to supporting new businesses we suggested that Philippe look for guarantors for his contract with us. His in-laws were happy to support their daughter and her husband. Problem solved!

The funding for his equipment was very straightforward and now a whole raft of new patissiers are learning their craft and producing French styled pastries for the locals.

Having worked for a High Street chain of opticians for years, Tim opened his own practise on the local business park, between a pharmacy and a convenience store.

With plenty of equity in his personal property, we were happy to support this new venture.

An asset finance agreement for £85K was drawn up to fund the purchase of the instrumentation, signage, carpets and furniture.

Tim was delighted with the support we gave him and the confidence we showed in him and his new business.

More bounce in the fitness industry

More bounce in the fitness industry

An existing client with an established gym in the North West knows how important it is to keep up with the latest trends.

Mike has spent £15K on building works and decorating throughout. He has taken an area that was under-performing and has dedicated it to a trampoline studio.

We were delighted to fund the trampolines and the new fit out of the reception area on an asset finance contract over 3 years.

Apparently the increase in turnover, since the renovations, is more than paying for the new investment. Now the members are happy, Mike is over the moon and we, as usual, are delighted to support a successful business.

An enlightened approach to financing businesses

An enlightened approach to financing businesses

Established Newport entrepreneur, Paul Gray, wanted to open a Yankee Candle retail unit in the new Friars Walk development.

Funding the fitting out of the shop entailed a whole list of “systems” – lighting, CCTV, alarm and sprinkler systems, together with signage, shutters and display units – not every funder’s cup of tea.

Paul was referred to Armada because of our renowned reputation for supporting start-ups and our holistic can-do approach to finance.

He must have been happy with the funding package that enabled him to open on time. As he said -

“The whole process was handled in a professional yet friendly manner and all the paperwork was concluded in a timely fashion. I would not hesitate to recommend you to my friends and business associates.”

When Bethen Barnfield saw a redundant loo block and shelter at Ridgeway Common near Newport she planned to convert them to a local café, incorporating a loo. Some of her friends thought she was a little potty. Now that the café is up and running they know she hasn’t gone round the bend.

Bethan didn’t know whether an asset lender would help her with funding all the equipment she needed. Now she knows that financing new businesses is bog standard for Armada.

As Bethan said –

“Setting up a new business is hard but dealing with Armada was one of the easiest and most straightforward parts.”

Caring for our future

Caring for our future

Established children’s nursery operators in South Wales were planning to extend the number of sites they run by opening a new facility in the iconic Norwegian Church, overlooking Swansea Bay.

Intelligently they decided not to tie-up all their own capital in the fit-out costs but to finance the assets needed for the new venture.

Looking for the best funders for the project, Peter & Victoria asked local entrepreneurs and nursery and play centre owners. One name kept cropping up as the expert funders to the nursery industry – Armada.

“Our Swansea nursery is due to open in Spring 2015, thanks to Armada providing us with quick finance decisions.”

Many office based business owners would love to work from home but their internet speed prevents this option.

For people living in or around Wells in Somerset, Judith Ludovino has set up MendipHUB, to provide serviced office facilities with car parking and superfast internet connection.

Judith knows a thing about quality and service so she asked Armada to finance the furniture and communication system for her new enterprise.

“Armada Finance has offered the Hub the chance to preserve cashflow in the early months of my business.”

Fit for life

Fit for life

In 2011 James Gatward and his daughter Annabel Glynn were planning to open a fitness studio in the charming yachting centre of Lymington, overlooking the Isle of Wight.

They weren't looking to open a conventional gym but a studio concentrating on 30 minute exercise routines for weight loss, fitness and mobility improvement as well as body shaping.

To their amazement, when they turned to their bankers for support they were informed that the bank was not interested in funding gym equipment.

Armada took little time to establish that James and Annabel were worth supporting and the offer to asset finance their gym equipment was immediately accepted. The folk of Lymington are so much fitter thanks to Shape Up Studios.

The Scallop Shell

The Scallop Shell

The village of Beckington, near Bath is surrounded by top quality country house hotels and their high-earning patrons. Not surprising then that Gary & Lisa Rosser chose White Row Farm, Beckington as the site of their multi-functional fish business.

With a wet fish department, seafood deli and fish and chip take-away and restaurant they have everything to attract the decerning locals and hotel guests for miles around.

Fitting out the premises to a standard that would suit the trade they wanted to attract was essential. Fortunately for Garry & Lisa Armada understands their business like no other and with Armada’s history of supporting start-up businesses it was very straight forward for Garry & Lisa to obtain asset finance for the equipment they needed. They had a commitment to assist them within 24 hours of asking.

Sammy Ho & Martin Chow already have four standard Chinese restaurants and several letting properties. After significant research and sitting down with their accountant several times they decided to purchase a failed fish and chip shop, refurbish it to a very modern, high standard and have Sammy’s brother run it for them.

Wanting to keep all their cash for future property purchases, their accountant advised them to talk to Armada, knowing that we had been very supportive of the Chinese community for nearly forty years and knew more about the catering industry than any other lender.

Martin & Sammy signed an asset finance agreement for a four-pan range, fryers and a Sammic potato peeler.

Theo & Eleni could stand the problems in Greece no longer. Eventually they decided to emigrate to Britain and settled near Altrincham in Cheshire, not too far from Eleni’s uncle who has restaurants in and around Manchester.

Eleni had worked in a thalassotherapy unit back home in Kos and decided to open a hair and beauty salon to satisfy the local need of wealthy young women who had not been touched by the recession.

Because they were new to the country, about to start a new business and were renting their house, no bank or asset finance company was prepared to support them.

When they came to Armada we asked if their uncle would back their project. He was only too pleased to guarantee his family and Armada was only too pleased to fund all the assets needed.
